What is Invisalign?

Getting straighter teeth or better tooth alignment is the focus of the dental specialty called orthodontics. While braces have been the most common treatment for crooked teeth for many years, clear aligners have become a very common choice in recent decades. Clear aligners, sold as brands like Invisalign and 3M Clarity, are dental devices that sit over and encase the teeth to slowly adjust tooth position over time. The popularity of clear aligners is due partly to the fact that they are less obvious than braces and can be removed and replaced easily during eating and drinking. But, they are also typically much faster and less painful than braces making them an ideal option for many patients.

Invisalign Candidates

Candidates for clear aligners are those who want to see straighter teeth and a new smile without the pain and hassle of braces.

It is important to keep in mind that since Invisalign and other aligners can be removed, there is a level of commitment and responsibility that must be taken. The aligners must be removed when eating and drinking and then put back into the mouth ASAP to ensure they are working for enough hours throughout the day. Younger patients or those with very demanding lifestyles may not be ideal candidates.

If you'd like to find out if you'd be a good candidate for Invisalign Detroit orthodontists at Lakeshore Dental Specialists can address that and any other questions you have during your initial consultation. Call us today!

Consultation and Preparation

At your consultation, your orthodontic treatment provider will discuss each possible option with you and determine if clear aligners are an ideal solution. Our goal is to ensure that each patient receives the highest level of care and personalization, so we will talk about your aesthetic and dental hygiene goals along with any other concerns or questions you might have. One of the top preparation recommendations we give our patients who are interested in clear aligners is to start brushing and flossing your teeth after every meal to get it into your routine. This will make it easier once you actually have the aligners.

Your Invisalign Journey

The process will start with a digital scan of your teeth, which will be used to determine your ideal 3M Clarity aligner product and customize your aligner trays. Once you receive your aligners in about two weeks, you will begin to wear them every day with a goal of at least 22 hours. They will be taken out during meals, drinking anything other than water, and brushing and flossing. Most patients get new trays every one to three weeks. Depending on the severity of teeth misalignment, patients may wear their aligners for anywhere from a few months to over a year.
